BOCES Nursing Program Again Achieves 100% Pass Rate
Submitted by john.gethicker on Wed, 01/27/2010 - 17:19 The Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES Practical Nursing Program is please to announce a 100% pass rate on the national licensing examination for its 2009 graduates. This is the third year in the past four the BOCES program has achieved a 100% pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX -PN). Once the exam is passed, the graduate is then licensed as a practical nurse. In 2009, BOCES graduated 39 individuals from its three career and technical education centers: at Olean - 20 graduates, at Belmont - 11 graduates, and at Ellicottville - eight graduates.
All 39 practical nursing graduates from 2009 passed the licensing exam. Catherine Tomerlin RN, BSN serves as the lead teacher for the BOCES Health Occupations/Practical Nursing Programs. Mrs. Tomerlin said, “This ranks our program within the top 10 schools of the 68 practical nursing programs in New York (state). The overall pass rate for New York state was 80% and the national passing rate was 86%.” Program instructors are Joan Weinman, Kim Howard and Kelly Williams along with several part-time clinical instructors. According to Mrs. Tomerlin, “Our continued success is based on a number of factors. We have an excellent experienced teaching and clinical staff. We also have wonderful support from many area health care agencies where our students gain valuable clinical experience.” Mrs. Tomerlin added, “I’d also like to thank our BOCES administration and staff for their ongoing support as we continue to strive for excellence in providing nurses through our nursing program. The nurses coming out of our BOCES program also continue to fill a need caused by an ongoing nursing shortage in our local area and nationwide.” BOCES offers this part-time practical nursing course at the BOCES Centers in Ellicottville, Belmont and Olean.
