On September 14, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra performed two concerts at Olean High School.  Over 1,100 students were transported to OHS to experience Music As Education.  The performances, sponsored by C-A BOCES, were geared for 2nd and 5th graders.

Matt Kramer, conductor for the BPO, has embraced the concept that music enhances the concepts that classroom teachers are covering.  The BPO masterfully linked their performances with the New York State Standards in English Language Arts, Social Studies and the Arts.

The 2nd graders were active participants in a lively musical lesson about tall tales and storytelling.  The orchestra, accompanied by a singer/storyteller, performed "Peter and the Wolf" as well as an American folk song.  Students mastered hand gestures and sang along as they learned about literary devices and character themes.

The BPO brought local history to life through music for the area’s  5th graders.  They heard songs and explanations of the Erie Canal, the Underground Railroad, Seneca/Native American culture, and the War of 1812.

Each year, Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES contracts with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.  BOCES Arts in Education helps schools enrich the lives of their students by providing opportunities to experience the performing arts.  For more information, contact Cindy Crandall, Program Manager for Student Programs at 716-376-8284.
