Memorable Fishing Trip for Big Picture Students

Earlier in October, students from Big Picture at Elm Street Academy took a fishing trip to the Oak Orchard River and Marsh Creek in Watersport, NY, as both an environmental conservation and fishing lesson.  Students learned about the different fish the Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) stocks at the location, as well as their habitat and what impact the fish stocking program has on the environment. After learning about the native fish and the stocking program, the students spent the next several hours fishing the rich waters.  The popular fishing destination is filled with steelhead, brown trout, and the Chinook Salmon.  The Chinook are the most sought after fish.  Many of these Salmon weigh in excess of 20 pounds.

Landing a prized Chinook.  The thrill of a lifetime!
